I have to buy 4E shoes and will generally order both a 9.5 and a 10 just in case. In boots I automatically jump to a size 10. I have a high instep and need arch support too. I figured since they were an open style strap back that a 9.5 would be perfect.I have been buying Dunham for years because of their quality and comfort. They tend to cost a little more but they are worth it to me. If my feet are not happy, I am not happy. So I didn't think twice about ordering these sandals. Out of the box though they are a little snug. This was my first impression after working all day. So maybe my feet needed to rest overnight. I also had my dress socks on for the first fitting (in case I wanted to return them). I had to unstrap them completely to get them on. I was really unsure but liked the style so much I went all in and removed the socks. They fit a little better. I think the material on the inside of the sandal was grabbing the sock making it feel hard to get them on. Initially, my heel was almost over the edge of the foot bed in the back of the sandal and I was worried. Of course I hadn't really jammed my foot forward yet. Once I wiggled my foot and forced it in more my heel was completely on the foot bed. I took them off and decided to wait until the next day to give them another try.The next morning I put both sandals on and walked around the house on carpet and tile for about an hour or more doing the things I normally do before work. In that time the fit improved considerably and I knew I was not returning them. I really liked how I could feel the cool air on my feet as I moved about.I know I would not be able to wear these all day walking or standing knowing they lack that needed arch support, but I wouldn't let it stop me from doing these things. I just know at the end of the day I would know it.If you really need something to trek around in all day and want the added support for your arches and not a fan of the strap style back, check these out ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008M27BWI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). I also bought these just because I wasn't sure which ones I would like more and these are definitely more closed in but they do offer more arch comfort, and you would walk all day and night in these.I bought the Dunham’s (and Timberlands) primarily to wear on beach based vacations (both locally and abroad) where at night you might want to go to some of the fancier restaurants that have dress codes and that don't allow flip flops or other open toe sandals. The build quality is no less than I'd expect from Dunham and I am sure I will have these a long time. The leather is soft and pliable and will only get better over time. The foot bed is not what I would call cloud like but then they don't claim to be either. But, it is not raw leather hard either. Overall, I would say for leather sandals they will break in nicely and will be butter soft in no time.I highly recommend these sandals if you want a dressier sandal that will last a long time, and the style is something you are used to (I was not) or might want to give a try.
