Listed as a rain coat but it does have a lining and insulation. I would categorize more as a mid-weight rain coat. When i usually think of a rain coat I think of a thin minimal insulation coat to be worn over a dress jacket with no insulation in the coat itself. This coat is warmer than that and I wore it on a 20 degree day with nothing but a T shirt and sweater underneath and i was warm
