Description
The Rolls MX153 is a one-half rack space, two microphone and three stereo source mixer. The unit provides a compact and efficient way to mix sources such as AM/FM tuners, CD players, and video players with dynamic or condenser microphones. Applications include background music and paging for small clubs, churches, schools, restaurants, etc. Each microphone channel has a Level and Tone control. Sources One and Two have Level adjustments and pass through combined Bass and Treble controls. Source Three has a Level adjustment only. The Microphone inputs are balanced XLR jacks, all Source inputs are stereo RCA except for the front 1/8 jack on CH3 for an MP3 player, etc. The main output is stereo RCA. An included 12VDC adapter (Rolls PS27) provides power to the unit. A series of six DIP switches provide important features to the MX153. Two switches apply the 12VDC of phantom power to the individual Microphone Inputs. A second switch sums the program material of Source Three to mono, and a third sums the overall output to mono. Another switch provides priority ducking to Source Three input allowing that channel to mute the other source inputs for use with a jukebox. The final switch configures Microphone Input One as a paging input, ducking the other microphone and Sources One and Two.

Defective EQ out of the box, not impressed, sending back.THE GOOD:* It has a gutsy gain structure, capable of decent output, did not hear any noise or hum.* It's got a lot of features for this price point.* The case is sturdy, all metal.* The knobs and general hardware quality seem good.* The input / output jacks on the backplane do not buckle when you attach plugs to them.* The size and small footprint of this is attractive for certain set it and forget it audio type installs.THE BAD:CON1:* My EQ circuit was broken - out of the box - for the Line 1 & 2 inputs. It's a global EQ - i.e. it affects (or should affect) the 1st two Line inputs. - Treble EQ did absolutely nothing. Zilch. - Bass EQ changes were so subtle as to be almost imaginary. Something is wrong with a solder joint or tracing, etc somewhere. In short: There was certainly *** NO *** + or - 12DB of bass or treble happening with the particular unit I received. (Yes, I double-checked the dip configuration switch for system setup)CON2: While audio is I would say "clean" it is also kind of clinical / nondescript / perfunctory / forgettable. There I said it. One input on my Mackie VLZ1202 compared to this blows the doors off it. I get spoiled by that. Yes the Mackie costs almost 4X as much but they have the cheaper models now too. I was looking for this form though as I didn't want an entire conventional mixer "footprint".BACKGROUND: I own (and have owned) many many stereos, boomboxes, audio devices - more than probably the average person in their lifetime. I currently have 3 stereos including a Mackie / Yamaha Professional power amp component type setup. I used to do DJing and some live sound reinforcement/recording. Have run ARP2600, hand soldered a knockoff of a Sequential Pro 1 (400 piece kit) long ago. I'm unafraid of mixers, patchbays, DACs, impedence, EQ, etc.SUMMARY: I probably got a bad one. It happens. I just know I'm not impressed with my time being wasted like this. It's going back. This may be fine for some. Others report success with this. If the EQ worked I probably would have kept it but still longed for something better sounding. Will keep looking.P.S. Shure makes a mixer very similar to this one except is costs 2X as much ($260.00). The Shure unit has an internal power supply and probably works better (known Shure's reputation). I myself have never heard it though.P.P.S. Radio Design Labs and Furman are other manufacturers that make equipment somewhat in this design scope..
